Marriott Homes & Villas

Unlocking a New Customer Base for the World’s Greatest Travel Company

Marriott, a global hospitality brand, was looking to venture into the luxury “staycation” segment to compete with the rapidly increasing number of players in the vacation home rental space.

Publicis Sapient implemented an end-to-end platform to help Homes and Villas by Marriott International influence target customers.

The Imperative For Change

To stay ahead of their competition and deliver transformative value, Marriott launched the “Homes and Villas by Marriott International” (HVMI) brand in 2019 to compete with newcomers VRBO and booking.com.

With the pandemic slowing their growth, Marriott needed a new way to deliver on their vision to become the world’s favorite travel company—and gain a greater share of the customer’s travel budget.

The Transformative Solution

Publicis Sapient shared the vision of Marriott as a travel platform to create new value and accelerate business growth and aligned on a business case built around their new travel product: Homes & Villas.

The solution is a scalable, cloud-native microservices architecture that caters to Marriott’s 140M+ Bonvoy customers globally, integrating their hotel data and preferences into a curated “staycation” or “bleisure” experience.

The microservices architecture and AWS Cloud platform provide fast, reliable performance and the agility to add new features quickly, creating a more responsive customer experience.

Key AWS services leveraged: ECS, Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka (MSK), OpenSearch and CloudWatch along with standard EC2 and S3

"Thanks for the great work Publicis Sapient has done for the past several months. You brought your professionalism and great analytical skills to a challenging, fast-moving project."

The Business Impact

Publicis Sapient delivered the platform within 6 months of inception and, over the next 12 months, added new features, integrated with many new partners, and ultimately created a complete end-to-end platform with built-in inventory and reservations, automated card payment, Bonvoy integration, reporting and financial reconciliation.

Bonvoy guests can earn or use points, earn stays and advance their loyalty status without leaving the Marriott ecosystem, which offers an attractive alternative to Airbnb or VRBO for these brand loyalists.
